| You may not need to be convinced to TeleWork. If you are like many metro Atlantans, you waste hours 56 per year, on average -- commuting to and from work. It has probably occurred to you that the time you spend stuck in traffic could be spent with family or friends, or even getting more work done. Take some time to learn more about TeleWorking and how CobbRIdes and The Clean Air Campaign can help you spend less time on the road, be more productive and less stressed..
Benefits of TeleWorking
TeleWorking is an alternative to the traditional work arrangement. Instead of the worker going to work, the work instead goes to the worker.
By TeleWorking, you can enjoy:
- increased productivity (in the 10-20 percent range)
- reduced commute time and related costs (TeleWorking just one day a week can save an average of 72 hours every year*)
- reduced stress
- improved job satisfaction
- the ability to work during your peak times
Talking to Your Boss about TeleWork
Many employers who are unfamiliar with TeleWork probably have reservations about introducing it into the company or organization. Some of their questions may include:
- How will I know that the TeleWorker is actually working?
- Won’t it be hard to organize face-to-face meetings with TeleWorkers?
- Who will pay for the technology needed to keep the TeleWorker connected to the office?
Below are some tools and suggestions to help you talk to your boss about TeleWorking:
- Compile case studies of organizations who have successful TeleWork programs. The Clean Air Campaign has several available on its Web site.
- Clearly define what TeleWork is and what it isn’t including that most TeleWorkers work outside the office once or twice a week, not everyday.
- Emphasize the benefits that TeleWork can bring to the company such as increased productivity, reduced overhead and capital costs, reduced absenteeism, improved customer service, and enhanced employee recruiting and retention.
- Put the focus on “managing by results.” As long as the work is done well, it may not matter where it was done.
- Address the concerns of the managers and suggest practical solutions by preparing a proposal to management.
- Recommend a pilot program as a way to start.
- Review the implementation steps for TeleWorking.
- Download several of the TeleWork resource tools on this Web site, share them with your boss and demonstrate how easily a program can be developed.
